獻帝

Emperor Xian

Lived: 181 ~ 234

Profile

Liu Xie, last emperor of the Han. Enthroned at nine by Dong Zhuo, he escaped the chaos of Chang’an in a wandering court until Cao Cao installed him at Xudu — where for thirty years he served as the living banner of another man’s hegemony. His covert plots against Cao Cao all failed; in 220 he abdicated to Cao Pi, closing four hundred years of Han. As Duke of Shanyang, he was permitted, at least, to die of old age.

History vs. the novelHistoryvsNovel

The novel leans on the secret edict in the girdle to paint the tragic puppet. The historical Xian was not merely a symbol: he held a wandering court together, and carried his dignity even past the abdication.
