Yuan Shu

Courtesy name: 公路 (Gonglu)Lived: ? ~ 199

Profile

Yuan Shao’s cousin, who considered himself the true heir of the great Yuan house. He once ruled a formidable domain in Huainan with the Sun clan among his vassals — then the Imperial Seal fell into his hands, and in 197 he declared himself Son of Heaven. The pretension united everyone against him; extravagance and extortion did the rest, and he collapsed within two years. He died coughing blood after calling, in vain, for a cup of honeyed water — vanity’s perfect epitaph.

History vs. the novelHistoryvsNovel

One figure novel and history agree on almost entirely. Yet the record also shows his early power once nearly eclipsed Yuan Shao’s — he was more than the clown of the story.
