“If one must have a son, let him be like Sun Zhongmou. The sons of Liu Biao are no better than dogs and pigs.”
— Cao Cao
The scene behind the words
Cao Cao’s exclamation at Ruxukou, watching the perfect discipline of Sun Quan’s fleet. It contrasts the young man who inherited the Southland at about twenty and stood against him with Liu Biao’s sons, who handed over their province without a fight. The finest praise an enemy ever paid — and the benchmark of Sun Quan’s reputation since.
