The scene behind the words

In the novel, Guan Yu hurls this at Sun Quan’s envoy come to propose a marriage alliance. The histories say only that he refused the match and insulted the messenger, enraging Sun Quan; the famous line itself is fiction. It stands as the emblem of the diplomatic disaster — pride — that set up the fall of Jing Province.
