“With what shall I dissolve this sorrow? There is only Du Kang — only wine.”
— Cao Cao
The scene behind the words
The line that follows the famous sigh over life’s brevity in the Short Song; Du Kang is the legendary inventor of wine. But the "sorrow" here is no excuse for revelry — it is the thirst for talent not yet won, and the poem ends in imperial ambition. A millennium’s favorite drinking verse that is also, underneath, a conqueror’s sigh.
