“The heroes of this age are you, my lord, and Cao Cao — no one else. The likes of Yuan Shao do not count.”
— Cao Cao
The scene behind the words
Spoken over warm wine and plums while Liu Bei was living under Cao Cao’s protection. Cao Cao had read the measure of a man who did not yet own a single city — and the histories record that Liu Bei, startled, dropped his chopsticks. The original behind the novel’s celebrated "discussing heroes over plum wine."
