The scene behind the words

After the ritual triple refusal and "voluntary" abdication of Emperor Xian, the newly enthroned Cao Pi is said to have murmured this to his intimates. In one stroke it unmasks the sage-king abdications of antiquity as power politics all along — perhaps the most cynical line in East Asian political history. Note that it survives in the annotations, not the histories proper.
