ja豆がらを燃やして豆を煮れば、豆は釜の中で泣く。本は同じ根から生まれたのに、互いに煮ることのなんと急なことか。
The scene behind the words
The closing couplet of the poem Cao Zhi allegedly composed within seven paces, on pain of punishment from his emperor brother. The image — fratricide as beans boiled over their own stalks — is said to have shamed Cao Pi into silence. An anecdote from the Shishuo Xinyu rather than the histories, yet the first verse anyone reaches for on brotherly strife.
