ko신하로서 불충했고 자식으로서 불효했으니, 죽는 것이 마땅합니다. 청컨대 나가서 형을 받아 군법을 밝히게 해 주시오.
ja臣として不忠であり、子として不孝であったのだから、死ぬのが当然だ。願わくは出て刑に就き、軍法を明らかにさせてもらいたい。
The scene behind the words
Captured at Xiapi, Chen Gong was offered a way out by his old master — "if you die, what of your aged mother?" This was his answer. He chose principle over life and walked to the block himself; Cao Cao wept as he watched, and provided for the family ever after. The recorded standard for dignity in defeat.
