The scene behind the words
Liu Bei’s deathbed charge to Zhuge Liang at Baidicheng — the most extreme statement of trust a sovereign ever made to a minister. Weeping, Zhuge Liang vowed to serve "with every sinew, loyal unto death," and kept the vow for life. Whether the offer was sincerity or a test remains the most debated last testament in the entire saga.
